Apparition a sample story from A Compilation of Twelve Short Stories

AUTHORS NOTE I am Stephen Atkinson an unknown writer in the field of fiction. Born in a small village called Conisborough, South Yorkshire England one of seven siblings. My Parents moved the whole family to the City of Leeds West Yorkshire when I was five years old. I always had an active imagination but it took me until the age of 51 years to put into practice what I should have done many years earlier. At the age of 39 I immigrated to the beautiful island of Cape Breton Nova Scotia Canada. My beautiful Wife Nadine bore me two wonderful and gifted sons Adam and Aaron both equally imaginative and artistic and all 3 very much loved. It is because of my family I was inspired to put into practice what I had wanted to do for so long and I hope all that read my work are both inspired and entertained by my imagination and ideologies within the works I have produced. There is some bad language but I have tried to cater to the late teens and adults alike. I took great pleasure in w

Just got some more of the audio from Peter Hawthorn Belfast Bound, WHAT a difference listening to your work come to life; now I understand why people prefer to go for audio books. I was a bit skeptical about audio books verses print or e-book and wondered if I was making the right decision. I joined ACX and read up on all I could, I even went on ask Jeeves and yes ask Jeeves does still exist! to try to understand if audio was popular and to my surprise yes it is. Audio has been out there for decades but its only been in the last few years that it has taken off and become popular mainly due to today’s electronic devices. So why the big wow factor of audio….Simple , its easier than reading as most people prefer to listen to a book rather than read it and the benefits are they can multitask whilst they listen, in today’s modern society we are all busier in our lives and reading takes time and concentration , time we don’t have. Audio is easy to listen to and it can be listened alm

Authors notes Book 3

PETER HAWTHORN KUWAIT: IN TO THE FIRES OF HELL Authors Notes Peter Hawthorn and his men had been baptized in fire in Northern Ireland; this gave them the strength when they faced an adversary in Alaska. Outnumbered greatly and pitted against the elite of the Soviet Union they prevailed with a great loss of life but not in vain. Through their efforts and resolve of the Yorkshire spirit they prevented a pandemic that could have been of biblical proportions. Although the incident was covered up by the governments involved. Peter and his men grew into professional soldiers; battle hardened becoming men of a club only those who have seen action could understand. The horrors never left them and the lost friends never forgotten. Nightmares had waned and begun to subside. Peter married Mary and took Kenzie as his own flesh and blood, a step daughter he could never replace nor love any less even after Peter junior was born, his love for his family was total dedication as a husban

Authors notes Book 2

PETER HAWTHORN THE ALASKA INCIDENT Author’s notes Peter Hawthorn and his friends have completed a tour of duty in Northern Ireland, Peter met Mary Macintyre a young nurse during the troubles with her daughter Kenzie, a relationship for Peter and Mary flourished once their eyes met. Mary became the barrack nurse and Kenzie became the adopted daughter of the men of the 2 nd Yorkshire Regiment. Peter arranged for Mary and Kenzie to be sent to England out of harm’s way after being captured and tortured by the IRA. After losing a number of men during their tour Peter and nine others are informed that they are to be deployed as an exchange with an American missile defense battery of the 5 th US Army. Northern Ireland turned these sons of Yorkshire from boys into men but what they are about to endure would prove Northern Ireland to be nothing but a bus-man's holiday. The base in the middle of Brookes Forest hundreds of miles from the nearest populated area holds a

Authors Notes Book 1

PETER HAWTHORN BELFAST BOUND Author’s notes Peter Hawthorn was a quiet and reserved young man of twenty one, stocky build with a five foot ten frame. He had been raised by his Nanny since his parents were killed in a car crash when he was still a 4 month old baby. His Nanny did the best she could to raise Peter in the back to back terraced houses of Holbeck Leeds in the mid 1960’s.He was educated at Cross Flat’s junior and middle school then progressed to Parkside high were at the age of 16 he left school with a reasonable education. He joined the junior army two weeks later and aspired to what he wanted to do for the rest of his working life. He was promoted quickly within the junior ranks to the rank of Sergeant before at the age of Seventeen he moved over to the regular army and retained the rank of lance corporal. He had spent the next three years training and doing ceremonial duties, not exactly what he wanted but he kept his head down and tried to do and make t

Manipulation of novels

Manipulation….. Another question. “Would I allow manipulation of the books?” “What do you mean by manipulation?” I asked. “Would you allow a producer/ director to manipulate your books?” “Of course” I said. Peter Hawthorn Belfast Bound is going to be estimated at 10.2 hours in length in audio, can you imagine if a director turned my books into a movie how long each movie would be if he used every scene and every word in the novel. Most movies are made by adaptation from a book or a script and have to be refined to fit a certain length in minutes / hours. The average movie length is 1.30 hours to a max of 4 hours unless it’s a series so YES I would allow manipulation of the books as long as the story-line  is still there. I’m not a director or a screenwriter like I said and I’m certainly no movie professional so I would leave that side of it to the professionals after all they know what they are doing.

Movie ?

I was just asked a question. “Would I like to see my books made into a television series or a movie?” My answer obviously was “YES” I think if there was interest by a producer or director that the books would make great movies, they are action packed. Who knows they could turn out to be blockbusters but I’m no movie expert or screen writer. I did turn the Alaska Incident into a movie script and a couple of the short stories but I found that without the right connections your beating you’re head against a brick wall. Well of course any writer is going to yes to this question not because we think our work is the best since sliced bread or merely the fact that we wrote it, we can be a little vane or sensitive about our work. The fact of the matter is that movies cost a huge amount to produce and make these days running in some cases into the hundred million dollar mark with special effects and the cost of production. Actors alone are paid substantial amounts and the
Peter Hawthorn Belfast Bound Audio I received the first 15 minutes of audio and to be honest it sounds absolutely fantastic , can't wait for the rest of the recording to review. Chris Hogan has done a great job I would recommend his services if anyone out there is looking for a producer/ narrator for audio books. Once the full recording is received and reviewed I'll make another blog to let you all know what I think. Stephen :)
A question I'm frequently asked..... I was asked a question the other day “How do you write a story, do you write it down beforehand as a note?” My answer was simple….”No”  I write as I think of the story line. Anyone can write a story if you have a good imagination, the only thing I jot down on paper for reference is the characters otherwise the story comes straight from my imagination as it flows. I know in my mind how the story starts and how the story is going to end the two key factors as the rest (fill in) flows as the story progresses. To write a story the key elements are feeling and description. (FEELING) This can be emotions how a person is feeling whether sad or happy, anxiety or afraid ECT. If you can put to type or paper the elements that go with this emotion you can achieve the desired effect for the reader. We all know the feeling of being nauseated or afraid, we know how it feels to cry, laugh or become angry. It’s the very essence that makes
